The horrific 19/20 Black Summer bushfires devastated so much of Eastern Australia, with losses to property, wildlife, livestock and lives. On a property south east of Buchan, the losses included, fencing a home and several sheds and equipment, including the shearing shed. About 250 sheep missed out on shearing until late 2021 with nearly three years of wool on them.
Hilly (Warren) is a local farmer, fencer, and contract shearer in the Buchan area, shearing in a makeshift shearing shed with makeshift boards made from a large sheet of plywood, extended by means of an old door. Shearing can be back breaking work at the best of times, but Hilly had his work cut out for him with this mob. Occasionally during blows the shears hit a piece of wire causing the handpiece to jerk violently and jump out of gear. Prior to the fence-lines being cleaned up after the fires, some sheep would occasionally get the wire tangled up in their wool.
